Motorists heading through Streetsboro should have a new place to grab a coffee on the go by the holiday season. The Human Bean, a drive-in and walk-up coffee and smoothie shop, is expected to open later this fall on Route 43, said owner Ron Watson, who also owns a Human Bean on Whipple Avenue in Canton.
“I hope to have this thing all put together by early November,” he said. “I hope to break ground at the end of July or the first week of August. We’re doing a manufactured building that actually won’t arrive at our site until probably the beginning of October.”
The Human Bean will be located at 9215 Route 43 across from the Streetsboro Fire Station. The building will measure about 13 wide by 40 feet long. “It actually has a drive-up on both sides,” he said, adding there also will be a walk-up window and several outdoor tables. Although coffee will be prominently featured as a menu item, it won’t be alone, said Watson.
“We have breakfast sandwiches, bagels and breakfast muffins, biscotti, that sort of thing — quick order stuff,” he explained. In addition, he said fruit smoothies are trendy at the Canton Human Bean. “It’s a big part of what we do — 40 percent of what we do,” he said. Although the Human Bean is a drive-through place, Watson said a human element many customers appreciate.
“The idea is you don’t order at a menu board,” he said. “You pull up to the window and talk to the barista. That’s a nice touch. People enjoy that, I think, especially our regulars. Being able to say, ‘Can I get an extra shot of this?’ Or ‘Can I mix two flavors?’ is something people like.”
In addition to light breakfast items and a wide variety of smoothies, The Human Bean also features a variety of coffee and tea drinks, including matcha, espresso, and frozen espressos, as well as a variety of other chocolate caramel and other flavors for coffee.
“Half of our menu is frozen drinks, fruit smoothies, frozen espresso, frozen hot chocolates — there’s a wide variety,” he said. “One of the other components about The Human Bean is, they work directly with the farmers they buy from.”
In some cases, the company helps support the farmers’ communities, including building water irrigation infrastructure and other community projects.
Watson said he would like to have five Human Bean locations in 10 years, including the Streetsboro and Canton stores. Watson said the traffic count at the center of Streetsboro was one of the primary reasons he chose the site. “I think corporate is seeking 16,000 vehicles per day,” he said. “It really depends on what mix is there for shopping and residential areas.”
